Genre Paintings in the Mauritshuis

  • Genre paintings depict everyday life. They usually represent a wise lesson.

Genre paintings are works that depict everyday scenes of people going about their daily activities, such as peasants at country inns, mothers and children at home, and elegant companies in well-appointed interiors. These pictures frequently contain wise lessons that sometimes speak for themselves but in other cases can be difficult to unravel. The Mauritshuis has a collection of more than 100 Dutch and Flemish genre paintings that include well-known masterpieces by specialists such as Jan Steen, Frans van Mieris, Gerard ter Borch, Adriaen van Ostade, Gabriel Metsu, Gerrit Dou and David Teniers.
In this richly illustrated collection catalogue, the curators and paintings conservators of the Mauritshuis publish their up-to-date, scholarly views of all the genre paintings in the collection. Two essays provide a detailed discussion of the development of genre painting and an examination of the stunning technique underlying these enduringly appealing scenes.
